2023 is expected to be year that unearthed remains of 44 Revolutionary War soldiers are to reburied.

on May 24, 2023

The following is a rewritten account of a Story by Staff writer Kenneth C. Crowe II of the Times Union paper on May 23, 2023.

In 2023, the remains of 44 Revolutionary War American soldiers that were found in 2019 during construction on Courtland Street in the village of Lake George in New York, are ready to be reburied and officials want the federal government to oversee it.

They want the U.S. Army to get involved in burying the soldiers' bones at the state’s Lake George Battlefield Park to keep them in the community where they perished in 1776. Officials want the burials to happen in time for the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in 2026.

The New York State Museum says the graves are believed to be associated with a military hospital established at Fort George in 1776 to treat the sick and wounded who were sent down from Crown Point and Ticonderoga.  The soldiers may have died due to a smallpox outbreak.

The remains would have been enveloped in some mystery, if it were not for a regimental button that was entombed with them — a button with the insignia from the First Pennsylvania Battalion.

April 28th Business Meeting Minutes

on May 7, 2023

Our Secretary was absent due to a back injury.  Wish him a speedy recovery.

Members and Officers present were: Carl Hill (President), Mike Green (Newsletter), Lovell Aldrich (past President), and Jim Penny (Webmaster)

Our President, Carl Hill presented the projected scheduled Speakers for our regular meetings in May, July, and Sept.

As previous posted, Wesley Wright will be the Speaker at our May 30th Meeting.  Dr Greg Dimmick will be our July speaker and Chris Hammans will be the Speaker in September.

Carl presented an example of a flag cover and the recommendation that we purchase enough to protect the flags that we have.

Carl passed around the National Awards that the Chapter were received at the State Meeting last month.

One was the Col. Joe M. Hill Patriot Fund Award for total contributions that exceeded the previous year for 2022.  The second, was the Texas SAR Flag Presentation Award for the Chapter having recognised individuals, companies or organizations for US Flag displays for 2022.

Carl presented a printout of members who are delinquent in paying their Dues. Their are 14 members whose Dues are overdue. Additionally the List also included former members of the Chapter.

Those present discussed making an effort to reach out to both current and former members whose are overdue for their Dues to see if it was and oversight or a desire to becoming an active member again.

Carl presented a Form used by a local DAR Chapter which is used to learn more about Prospective Members.  He polled members present at the Meeting to determine if it is something which our Chapter might want to use.  Those present voted to use a Form and revise it for use by our Chapter.

Mike and Jim discussed the Newsletter and the Blog and efforts to improve it for the members enjoyment and to provide Chapter information.

Sincerely,

Jim Penny

What Battle was this? (part2)

WHERE WAS THIS?     WHAT BATTLE WAS THIS?    WHO WON!

Last week, I gave you a detail of the action of one member of the rebels (patriots) during a Battle that occurred.  Here is another detail.

The battle lasted about a half an hour. Only one Patriot was wounded, Lieutenant Thomas Nash, of Norfolk County.

During the battle, the Patriots crawled from their breastwork to retrieve wounded British to help care for them. When the battle was over, Captain ______ came out of the fort to bow his thanks for the humanity of the Patriots.

Be sure to read our Newsletter from Mike Green!  It will be published latter in May.

What Battle was this?

on May 2, 2023

The last among the Patriots to retreat was Billy Flora, a free black man.

Before retreating into the Patriot breastwork, he ran back to take up a plank of the bridge amid a shower of musket balls to slow the British advance.

WHAT BATTLE IS THIS?    WHAT BRIDGE IS THIS?    WHERE WAS THIS?

WATCH FOR THE NEXT NEWSLETTER FROM MIKE GREEN!

It should be published later in the month.
