Flag Program at Rogers Middle School - November 10, 2016

Carl Hill and Tom Green presented a Flag Program to children at Rogers Middle School in Pearland, Texas just before Veterans Day. John Thompson also assisted and provided these photos.

Houston VA Medical Center Visit - November 5, 2016

On November 5, 2016 SAR members of the Alexander Hodge Chapter visited veterans at the Houston VAMC and distributed socks, magazines and personal grooming items for the veterans. The Alexander Hodge Chapter of the SAR visited the VA Hospital in the Houston medical center on Saturday November 5, 2016 in observance of Veterans Day on November 11th. There was a good turn out with seven members and two guests (Michelle Bultman and Carrie Isaacks Bornaschella). The group was escorted through the spinal cord injury unit by Liz Neely, the director of recreational therapy.

Patriot Ancestor: John Templeton, Jr.

JOHN TEMPLETON, Jr. (1760 - 1820) - Both John Templeton, Sr. and Jr. from Rowan County, N.C. fought in the Colonial Wars including Dunmore's War of 1774. They then joined in the Revolutionary War and fought in the Battle of King's Mountain, a decisive battle, on Oct. 7, 1780. John Sr. was a sergeant and flag bearer and John Jr. was a private and fifer. When the father was killed in battle, John Jr. picked up the flag and carried it through the battle. For his service, John was awarded a warrant for 2,000 acres in Tennessee. John married Nancy Hawkins, daughter of Joseph Hawkins of Tennessee. One of his other daughters married John Sevier, first Governor of Tennessee, and the other daughter, Rebecca married John Crockett and gave birth to nine children, three daughters and six sons, the fifth one was Davy Crockett of Tennessee and Texas fame.  John Templeton, Jr. is the ancestor of Tommy (Tom) Jacob Meinecke.

SAR Youth Award Programs

These programs are available to various age groups, grade levels, and organizations such as the JROTC and Eagle Scouts. Commemorating July 4, 1776, five members of the Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in Continental Army uniform: (l to r) Tom Meinecke, Carl V. Hill, Jr., Lovell Aldrich, Tom Green and Ron Brown gathered at the grave of Alexander Hodge in the Hodge’s Bend Cemetery in Fort Bend County.
There are records of 46 veterans of the Continental Army moving to Texas at the close of the American Revolutionary War. One of these, a man of unique character and great courage, was Alexander Hodge.

PLEASE NOTE:   The meeting will be held on Wednesday (Not the regularly scheduled Tuesday) June 1, 2016 at 6:30 PM. Dinner meeting at Sweetwater Country Club, 4400 Palm Royale Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77479. The speaker will be Dr. Caroline Castillo Crimm, born and raised in Mexico City, came to the United States a 17.  She holds degrees from the University of Miami, Texas Tech and completed her Ph.D. in Latin American History at the University of Texas at Austin.  Among her many books and articles is the award-winning De León, a Tejano Family History  (2004). During her forty years in teaching, she has won numerous awards including the prestigious Piper Award as one of the best teachers in Texas.  She has recently retired and been honored as a Professor Emeritus in History from Sam Houston State University for her work with her students, her university and her community.  Her topic will be “How Texas Saved the American Revolution”.

Patriot Ancestor: Peter Poland

PETER POLAND was a solider in the Pennsylvania Line. He served at Mudisland (Mud Island) Under Captain William Brown and in Proctor’s Artillery, crossing the ice-choked Delaware River with General George Washington. He served at the battles of Trenton and Princeton. He was listed as a Private 5th class in the Association and Militia, 7th Co. 6th Battalion of Lancaster Co. Commanded by Capt. James Taylor in June 1781. His son Peter Poland II served in the Virginia Militia 1778 and 1779.  Peter Poland is the ancestor of Carl Hill Jr.

Richard Curtis Osborne, 74, died peacefully on February 29, 2016 in Houston.   Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family at six o'clock in the evening on Thursday, March 10, 2016, St Theresa Catholic Church, 705 St. Theresa Blvd., Sugar Land, Texas 77498, where the Rosary for Curtis will begin at seven o'clock.  The funeral Mass will be offered at noon on Friday, March 11, 2016 at St. Theresa Catholic Church.
