Patriot Ancestor - Joseph Davis Wiseman (of member, James Penny)

on March 12, 2023

Joseph Davis Wiseman is the Patriot Ancestor whereby I was Admitted to the SAR on July 1, 2022.  He is of my Maternal Family Line and my 5th Great Grandfather.

Pvt Joseph Davis Wiseman, son Isaac Wiseman (1738-1818) and Elizabeth Davis Wiseman (1738-1807). Joseph was born in Berks County, PA on March 29, 1759.  Husband of Elizabeth Bateman.   Joseph also had a brother, three uncles, and several cousins who were patriots serving with troops of PA, N.C., and Maryland,

Joseph served as a Private in the first Regiment that went out of Burks Co., PA, Aug, 1776 and served under Capt. Perry Mitchell, Capt. Thos Berry, Major John Jones, commanded by Col. Mark Bird.  Part of force that occupied the Jerseys.  Discharged at Paulus Hook, New Jersey in November 1776.  Moved to Rowan Co, N.C.  in Oct 1777.

While in Rowan County, North Carolina, Joseph volunteered in Aug or Sept 1778.  He was under the command of Capt. Nickell and Lt Chapman.  His Company marched to Mecklenburg Co., where he was under the command of Col. James Lock and Gen. Griffith Rutherford (Brig Gen of Salisbury District Brigade).  Marched to Ten Mile House near Charleston, then to Two Sisters on Savannah River, where he joined Gen. Ashe immediately after his defeat, covering the retreat across the Savannah River.  Discharged at Salisbury, N.C. after nine months. (that would make it about June 1779).

In July 1779, substituted for 3 months, marched into Mecklenburg, where he was quickly discharged to go home and await further orders.  No further call was made.  Moved to Washington Co., Maryland, where under a call for a 9th militiaman, he was drafted for the war.  He and eight neighbors, hired a substitute for 45 pounds.  In about 1784 moved to Rockingham Co, VA.  In 1794, he moved to Greenbriar Co., Va, where he died on Dec., 27th 1836.

·         Interesting side note for us SAR Hodge Lodge members, apparently my ancestor at one time during his military service was under the command of Tom McCormick’s ancestor Col. Mark Bird of PA.
