Why we need members to help facilitate the SAR Programs for the Chapter

There are many Programs that benefit the Youth at different age levels.

For example, the SAR Poster Program is for Grades 3-4-5.  In 2003, our Chapter winner was a 5th Grader.  She advanced to the State Convention and won 1st place.  she then was advanced to the National Convention.

For the Chapter win, she received a $50 Savings Bond and for the State win, she received a $300 Saving Bond.

Over the years, our Chapter has awarded and recognized many accomplishments achieved in the Programs of the SAR.  Our Chapter's winners have went on to win 1st Place at State in the Poster Contest twice and placed 3rd once.   Winners from our Chapter placed 2nd in the Knight Essay Contest twice.  We have had a 1st and a 2nd Place winner in the C.A.R. Essay Contest.

The JROTC awards in the surrounding school districts has been an annual occurance.

This is just what I've found so far, I expect to find more!

The kids need your help, we need a member to take a Contest and a School District and help promote and facilitate it.  Probably can find a Disteict employee to assist.

Reminder of use of SAR Logo received from State Historian

"As most of you already know, the SAR Branding Guide was released in 2023.

It is my understanding that we should no longer use the SAR Insignia without permissions from SAR headquarters.  We are to use the SAR Logo (with optional chapter name) in the left most significant position of chapter websites, newsletters, flyers, letterheads, etc.

I don't think retrofitting is necessary, but I believe ongoing websites, newsletters, etc are impacted.  So please review the websites and documents that you are aware of and advise the appropriate chapter members.

Need assistance or questions?"

Looks like I will have to switch position of the Logo on Chapter Newsletters.  jgp

Additional Awards at State Convention this past March.

The Chapter was also received the Col Joe M Hill Patriot Fund that is awarded annually for Chapters who have total contributions which exceed the total from the previous year.

The Chapter was awarded the Texas SAR Flag Presentation Award for recognizing companies and individuals for proper display, maintenance, and care when flying the U.S. Flag during the past year. We also received the Award last year.

Alexander Hodge Chapter Newsletter wins 1st Place in Group2 at State Convention in March

I hadn't heard anything about the results of the Newsletter Contest until checking the Texas Website and noticed there was a Link on the Heading of Contest/Programs with several Subheadings of Winners & Awards-State-2025.

The Ross Shipman Award was Contest for the best Electronic Newsletter published last year.  Alexander Hodge Chapter is in Electronic Group2 for Chapter memberships of 51-99.

I had submitted our December Newsletter.  I was afraid that it would be considered too long.  It was created for our enjoyment by looking back on all of 2024 and by looking forward to events for 2025.

However, since the Contest awards points for covering a range of subjects, I felt that we certainly would not leave any points on the Table!

Apparently, it worked!!!

Perpetual Membership, if right for you, could be a savings in the long-term

For any younger (than me) person looking to join the Sons of the American Revolution, you might want to consider Perpetual Membership.

Over a time, all Dues may continue to increase. Someone having a potentially long Membership Life, may want to consider this Program. Just do the math, to see if it is right for you.

I have an Excel Spreadsheet with current rates for both National and Texas. combined It doesn't want to Format correctly here, so if you would like it, message me.

Perpetual Membership Information

Note: The following rates are effective September 2023. Due to an increase in National dues for 2024, Life Membership rates have increased, updated charts have been posted, and the new rates are now in effect for National Life Memberships. Perpetual Memberships must now be processed under the new rates.

Texas SAR Perpetual Membership pays National, State and Chapter Dues of the respective Member for life. National and State dues are paid at the rate in effect each year even if they are increased. Chapter dues are paid at the rate of $9.50 as per Article XXIX, Section 1 of the Bylaws.

The Perpetual Membership Rate is based on the age of the Applicant and requires two separate applications (APPLICATION FOR ENROLLMENT IN THE NSSAR NATIONAL LIFE MEMBERSHIP PLAN and APPLICATION FOR ENROLLMENT IN THE TEXAS SAR PERPETUAL MEMBERSHIP PLAN). For example: the Texas SAR Perpetual Membership rate for an Applicant age 40 is $1,141 from the NSSAR National Life Membership Plan Application plus $790 from the Texas Perpetual Membership Plan Application which totals $1,931. The National Life Membership Rates may be found on the Application for Enrollment in the NSSAR National Life Membership Plan form. Your Texas SAR Perpetual Membership Rate can be automatically calculated for you on the Fee Calculator page.

A Texas SAR Perpetual Membership may be purchased in two unequal installments (First installment from NSSAR National Life Membership Plan rates and the second installment from Texas SAR Perpetual Membership Plan rates). The First installment will be used by the Texas SAR Treasurer to purchase a National Life Membership for the Applicant. The Applicant would be required to pay State and Chapter dues until the second installment is paid. After the second installment is paid, the Applicant would not be required to pay future State or Chapter dues.

Compatriots wishing to purchase a Texas SAR Perpetual Membership should complete a National Life Membership Plan form and a Texas SAR Perpetual Membership Plan form. Send the completed National Life Membership Plan form to the Texas State Secretary with a check payable to Treasurer General, NSSAR. Send the completed Texas SAR Perpetual Membership Plan form to the Texas SAR Treasurer with check payable to Texas State Treasurer. The National Life Membership Plan completed form is sent by Texas State Secretary to NSSAR to purchase a National Life Membership for the Compatriot. The Texas SAR Perpetual Membership Plan completed form is retained by the Texas State Treasurer to purchase the balance of the Texas SAR Perpetual Membership for the Compatriot.

                                Alexander Hodge Chapter No. 49

Business Meeting Minutes

        April 29, 2025

The officers of the Alexander Hodge Chapter #49 Sons of the American Revolution, gathered at Spring Creek Barbeque located at 4895 Highway 6, Missouri City, TX. In the private meeting room, Carl Hill called the meeting to order at 1:00 P.M.

Attending: Carl Hill (President), Don Burns (Vice President), Jim Penny (Newsletter and Web Master), Don Rollins (Sgt. Of Arms), Lovell Aldrich, and Steve Barber (Secretary)

Secretary Report: Steve Barber provided copies and reviewed the Chapters March 25th, 2025 Chapter meeting minutes. The minutes were approved by the attending officers.

Steve Barber reported that, as of April 29, 2025, the State of Texas SAR office reported that only 8 Alexander Hodge Members failed to submit their 2025 annual dues. All of these members were contacted by email and or telephone concerning the current dues due for 2025. One member did commit to paying those dues and a copy of his statement was sent to him for that payment.

Treasurers Report:

Carl Hill presented the Treasurer’s Report. The Chapter’s Treasury has a balance of $9,459.12. after the following cash transfers to the Chapter,

1)    $513.00 To Alexander Hodge SAR Chapter from State SAR– Refund for Junior ROTC metals and certificates.

2)    $133.00 To Alexander Hodge SAR Chapter from State SAR – Perpetuals\ Member Fund.

3)    $1333.33 – Alexander Hodge Chapter additional share of funds raised by Richard Zdanowicz, previous District 7 VP for the Junior ROTC Scholarships for 2025.  This brings the total JROTC scholarship money raised for the Alexander Hodge Chapter to $1891.66. To allow the reward of two $500.00 Fort Bend High School cadets and 3- $300.00 scholarships to Lamar High School cadets,  it was voted on to add $8.34 from the Chapter’s Treasurer funds to these funds to allow these schlorship awards in 2025.

4)    The Chapter received a donation of $125.00 from Mrs. Bernice Mistrot.

Registrar’s Report:

Five (5) new applications have been submitted to National SAR for Robert Rhodes, Joshua Evans, Sean Hicks and Dr. Randal Glenn. The approval for Dr. Randal Glenn was just received. The fifth application was a supplemental for Gayle E. Barber, father of Steven Barber. For this supplemental, National required a birth certificate, even though Mr. Barber was listed on the applications for his son Steven Barber and Grandson Matthew Barber. A birth certificate was acquired and sent to National. The other applicants are pending.

Three (3) applications are at the SAR State Level for Dr. Thomas Cool, his son Jack Phillp Cool and Doug Thorpe.

Registrar committee is actively working on applications for Brandon Draper, Micheal Bishop and three of his relatives, and Thomas Whitenton, the 2-year-old grandson of Tim Birtcher.

Sandy Barber, Alexander Hodge DAR Registrar is working on the completion of a SAR application for the son of Sylvia Garcia, who is a recent new DAR applicant and a rather difficult application completion for. Richard Laughlin.

The committee also reports working on 5-6 additional applications that have recently expressed interest in joining the Alexander Hodge SAR Chapter.

Web Site and Newsletter Report:

Jim also presented a Mentor Training program for new members to improve Chapter recruiting and retention of new Chapter members. This structure program from the State SAR looks very promising as program to adopt to improve Chapter membership and participation in Chapter activities. This program would require active participation of existing members as mentors to use this program to recruit new members and having new members actively participating in Chapter events. The program has sign on paperwork, a Power Point presentation, a list of mentor responsibilities and a State lapel pin recognizing mentors’ participation. Jim produced an “Alexander Hodge #49 New Member Orientation Manual for 2024-2025”, for new members coming into the chapter. This manual explains the history, the organization, where to find SAR items and functions of the SAR organization from a local, State and National SAR level.

Jim Penny is also working on a Chapter May 2025 newsletter

Finally, Jim bought up the need for Chapter SAR biographies from Chapter members for The Texas SAR Achieves committee publishing volume 3 of the Texas Society History in 2025. The last time this was published as volume 2 was 2005. Each Chapter member is encouraged to provider a short one-page biography and a portrait picture to Jim Penny to be included in this publication. The Chapter had 13 members listed in volume 2. An example of a biography is available on request. The deadline for submittal of your biography is July 1st, 2025. Today there are only 2 biographies submitted.

Evening Speaker: Mr. Blake Pfiffer “Shouts from the Republic”

Blake Pfiffer's family goes back to the original 300 settlers of Americans that came to settle Texas, originally as citizens of the Mexican nation. Mr. Pfiffer has written a book chronologizing the events that occurred prior to the Texas Revolution and events during the fighting and settling of the Texas Revolution. The book published in 2024 entitled “Shouts from the Republic”, reviews the events in this time in history of Texas and of the settling of Texas.

Several hundred Americans came to the area known as Texas for several reasons. Originally the land was promised as cheap or even free if you agreed to settle on the land. ($0.50 per for 45 acres) Secondly, the forming of the Nation of Mexico from the Spanish was based upon the same constitutional rights and freedoms that were established in the forming of the United States with its Bill of Rights and the US Constitution. This attracted American’s that were poor, running from debt or from criminal charges back in Eastern US, and looking to start new lives and opportunities.

At first the relations of the Angleton Americans with the Mexican government were good, being treated as any other Mexican citizen. The primary issue with having Mexican support was issues with raiding Indian’s out of Oklahoma and in parts of Texas. When Mexico started to pull back from those responsibilities, the leader of the Angleton American settlers, Steven Austin went to Mexico City to protest the lack of support to the Texas territory and demand better representation in the Mexican government. Steven Austin was thrown in prison in Mexico City and held for weeks. Now the American immigrants were being treated as illegal immigrants. Of course, this led to an uprising of the people living in the Texas territory. Another fact in these events is many Mexican citizens did not like the Mexican leader Santa Ana and either supported the Angleton Americans or were chose to not support the Mexican government in their actions.

Mr. Pfiffer then reviewed much of the military action that took place between the 700,000 in strength Mexican Army and the small militia groups that fought against the Mexican army. The first skirmish in Gonzalez, Texas the Angleton Texans did well with losing only one Texan killed, with 80 dead Mexicans and the Texans capturing 21 cannons. However, the mobilization of the main Mexican army had yet been completed.  The next battle, several months later was the Alamo, in San Antonio, TX, where all 170 Texans that were defending the Alam were killed by the Mexican army.

Future skirmishes and troop movements occurred as the Mexican army attempted to corral the much smaller Texans army. Through effective scouts reporting the movement of the Mexican army, misleading the Mexican army on the whereabouts of the Texans army and sheer luck, Sam Houston’s small army overwhelmed a small contingency of the Mexican army left with its leader Santa An at San Jacinto, Texas.
